1. Markt Square

Upon the return of the Crusades, the Count of Flanders returned with what was believed to be the blood of Christ. Without opening until today, the relic remains in this 12th-century chapel.

It is believed that it is the only sculpture that left Italy in its life, the Virgin of Michelangelo is a beautiful figure of marble brought to Bruges in 1506 and lodged since then in the Church of Our Lady.

5. Memling Museum

Originally built as a medieval hospital, the Memling Museum offers a fascinating view of the ancient history of Bruges. Today, the museum is part of the St John’s Hospital complex.

6. Fiestas de Zand

July, August and September are home to these always popular flea markets. Multitudes flock to inspect the arts, crafts and souvenirs offered in the lively bazaars.

7. The bell tower

One of the city’s major landmarks, the 83-metre-high bell tower dominates the city’s main square. Dating back to 1240, the original tower was destroyed by a fire and then rebuilt. Climb the 366 steps to enjoy a magnificent view of the city.

8. The channels

Sometimes known as “Venice of the North”, Bruges is a myriad of networks of channels. Originally an important trade route, today the canals are used exclusively for tourism and are a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

9. The Minnewater

Known locally as “The Lake of Love”, this charming lake is located at the entrance of the city. Elegant swans adorn the lake, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city. During the summer, pop concerts play in the adjacent park, attracting crowds up close and far.

10. The Beguinage
